Clear Your List : The Journey

Clear Your List

by Ezell Cook Jr. on 09/29/11

What is on your list of things to accomplish? Do you have a bucket list, things you want to do before you expire? What is stopping you from checking some of your items off of the list? Do you procrastinate or do you lack energy / motivation to get the ball rolling? What can you do to remove that block? We all have something that gets in the way from completing tasks, but the trick is to not let your block be a permanent one. For instance, I am usually motivated and I even get tired of making lists and checking things off, but when I stop making lists or paying attention to my own progress, I procrastinate even more. The good thing for me is that this never lasts too long, and right after one of those dormant periods I come back with a fury. I am one of those people who marinade on an idea and work it over a bit before I take action. I suppose there are pros and cons to this behavior but when I act, I do so decisively. This helps me really motor thru the job at hand. Time stops for me while I am focused on my goal and I let very little get in my way.

Finishing things we start is very satisfying and staying busy makes us feel very productive but don’t neglect yourself by forgetting to have down time. The mind and the body need to be still sometimes and if you think you can get around this law of nature, think again. If you don’t listen when your body sends clues that it is time to slow down, then it will shut down on its own. This shutdown can come in many different forms. For some people it may be the flu. For others it may be a migraine headache. Still for others it might come as muscle cramps or lack of the ability to focus. The point is, take care of the machine that is your vehicle, or your down time could be a lot longer than you would like.

We each have our own rhythms so the trick is to learn to listen to your body when it gives you a gentle nudge that it is time to slow down. This can take some of us half a life time to catch on to, especially for so called over achievers; yet I believe that once we get our body’s signals down, there is no limit to what we can achieve. Love and take care of your partner (your body) so that it can take care of you. Be productive but be balanced as well.

Peace be with you, Coach Ezell
